A tour of Kilne OS 0.1.0

Here is what you see, in order, when you start Kilne OS 0.1.0.

1. The boot menu

Two choices: Install Kilne OS, which is the default after five seconds, and Try Kilne OS, a full live session.

2. The installer

A branded installer walks you through welcome, license, language, keyboard, disk, account and summary. It asks for 15 GB of disk and 1 GB of RAM. The license step shows the Kilne runtime’s license, and you accept it there.

3. The login screen

A dark, quiet screen with the K mark, the clock, your avatar and a password field. Switch user and the power menu sit in the corner.

4. The desktop

It starts empty, on purpose. There is a top bar with the date and the network and battery status, a dock along the bottom, and a wallpaper of dunes. Documents, Downloads and Pictures are ready, with a few sample pictures and a PDF in Pictures.

5. The launcher

Press Super + Space. A grid of apps appears with a search box. Programs you install with apt show up here too. Alt + Tab shows window thumbnails.

6. The apps

  • Files with tabs, grid and list views, and thumbnails
  • Terminal, native, for kilne, apt and everything else
  • Text Edit, with live Markdown and code highlighting
  • Viewer, for images and PDFs
  • Settings, covering appearance, network, display, sound, Bluetooth and more
  • Store, to find, install and update apps
  • Chromium, for the web

7. Make it yours

In Settings, switch between dark and light, pick one of five accent colours, turn on reduce motion, and choose a wallpaper. The whole system follows. Try it on the themes page.

That is the tour. It is short on purpose.
